Why I am Running

My name is Tim Thomas, and I'm running for State Central Committeeperson for the Illinois 7th Congressional District because our party leadership needs to reflect the urgency and bold vision of our community.

This district is one of the most vibrant and historically significant in the nation, and it is home to incredible diversity, as well as profound disparities. To tackle the systemic issues of economic and racial inequality, we can no longer accept politics as usual.

I’m not a career politician; I’m an activist. My experience as a labor union activist has shown me the power of collective action, the necessity of fighting for fair wages and working conditions, and the critical role of worker power in building a just society. As an educator, I’ve seen firsthand how a lack of resources and opportunity holds back our youth and perpetuates inequity. As a locally elected official, I understand the mechanics of government and the need to deliver tangible results at the neighborhood level.

I am a democratic socialist and an unyielding equity advocate. My platform is simple: we must center the needs of working people, the marginalized, and the underserved. This means fighting for a Green New Deal, universal healthcare, fully funded public education, and housing justice.

As your State Central Committeeperson, I commit to being Transparent, Accessible, and Accountable.

Transparent in all party decisions, sharing information, and opening the door to our community. Accessible to every precinct committeeperson, every activist, and every voter in the 7th District. Accountable to our progressive values, ensuring our party fights for big, transformative change, not just incremental gains.

I’m running to build a party that is truly a movement and a fighting force for the future. Join me as we organize, advocate, and win.

An Illinois State Central Committeeperson (SCC) plays a vital role in shaping the leadership and direction of the Democratic Party at the state level. They represent their congressional district on the State Central Committee — the official governing body of the Democratic Party in Illinois.
